Fear No More (2024)
This work explores my complex relationship with my own blood; it is both the life force that sustains me and a carrier of the very same HIV virus that I watched kill my first lover, John. Despite medical advances that mean the viral load in my blood is undetectable (and therefore untransmittable), I am still conditioned from the early decades of the AIDS epidemic to view my blood – and its (latent) destructive potential – with horror and fear. Working with glass, this is a feeling I have occasion to confront regularly.
The title comes from Shakespeare's Cymbeline (via Sondheim's "The Frogs"). The colour of the gold ruby enamel is only achievable due to a special reaction in the kiln with the tin side of float glass.
